Tasmania has joined a nationwide enforcement effort targeting cryptocurrency ATM scams after police disclosed AUD 2.5 million (USD 1.6 million) in losses among the region's top 15 users. Nearly a quarter of the stolen funds flowed through crypto ATMs, prompting coordinated action with federal agencies.

Scammers increasingly direct victims to crypto ATMs when banks block suspicious transactions, according to Detective Sergeant Paul Turner. The schemes often involve fabricated investment opportunities or romance scams, leaving victims financially devastated.

Australia's crypto ATM network has expanded to 1,900 machines—the world's third-largest—creating both accessibility opportunities and regulatory challenges. The Australian Federal Police and AUSTRAC are leading the cross-jurisdictional crackdown.
